In this book (A3 size) I am circling around ideas and materials, trying to find a thread I want to follow. The ‘babies’, ‘big and little’ and ‘smells’ themes seem to be merging, possibly.

These are my favourite images from this book so far:

Going back to Katherina’s briefing videos, I was reminded of the fact that a sequence doesn’t mean it has to be a ‘story’ in the traditional sense. I came up with a thought about a simple series of ‘before and after’ images.

Play - 'Big and little'

Drawings and thoughts around the interplay between a large parent and a small child.

Play - 'Smells'

I did a short ‘writing picturebooks’ course and it inspired me to revisit a vague idea I’d had about making a book about smells. I am quite sensitive to smells and I thought it would be interesting to explore this in imagery.

I was also very taken with the lushness and scent of May foliage at the time, so tried to capture this. The character being a ‘vessel’ for the smell in their transparent-ness.

Observational drawing of the local area with ink, plus imagining a small child smelling things.
